It was a brutally cold January evening in the year 2000, the kind of night when the air stings and time feels frozen. For Bill, time wasn’t just frozen, it was unraveling. The weight of a recent diagnosis had begun to set in: Multiple Sclerosis, a name that sounded distant and clinical until it shook the very foundation of his life.
Just weeks earlier, Bill was like any other devoted father and loving husband, healthy, hardworking, and full of dreams. But MS doesn’t knock gently. It barges in. And as Bill sat in stillness that evening, alone with his thoughts, fear, and frustration, a quiet whisper pierced through the noise, not of despair, but of something divine.
In the months that followed, Bill lost his vision completely. Five long, disorienting months in darkness. No light, no color, no faces of the children he adored. But then, against all odds, his vision returned. And with it came something more powerful than sight: clarity.
Bill realized that this diagnosis didn’t have to be the end of his story; it could be the beginning of something beautiful. If he couldn’t control his illness, he could control his response to it. And with that, he made a vow: “If I’ve been given a second chance to see the world, I’m going to use it to change the world, for someone else.”
And so, Reachout America was born.
Bill knew exactly who he wanted to help: children battling their own mountains: kids with disabilities, with life-altering illnesses, with dreams too often overlooked. Since 2006, Reachout America has done just that, sending children across the country to healing camps, joyful retreats, and empowering therapies that connect them with others just like them.
From horseback riding through Hippotherapy to dreaming among the stars at space camps, children with Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome, Congenital Heart Disease, and countless other conditions have been given more than just an escape; they’ve been given hope.
And Bill? He’s still leading the charge. With every dollar raised, every volunteer who joins the mission, and every child who steps off a camp bus grinning ear to ear, his personal nightmare continues to evolve into something remarkable: a movement of compassion.
Today, Reachout America thrives not just as a nonprofit but as a legacy of resilience, service, and unconditional love. It stands as proof that even the darkest chapters can lead to purpose, and that one man’s choice to rise above his own struggle has lit the path for hundreds of children to chase their joy.
And it’s just the beginning.
